RULE, SETH SAVAGE, 2 FT. 2 FLD, SCARCE, EARLY & GOOD I have a 2 foot, 2 fold rule that is marked " S. SAVAGE MIDDLETOWN CONN" on the bottom leg . Rule is boxwood with brass arch joint hinges, a Gunters slide and brass tips. It also has edge scales. Seth Savage, one of the early rulemakers who worked in relatively obscurity, made rules and squares in Middletown, Connecticut c. 1854. It is believed that he sold his business to Stanley around 1854-1855. As far as I can determine very little research has been done on this rule maker and information on his life and business is scarce. He certainly was not a prominent player in the rule making business and surviving examples of his work are pretty hard to find. This rule dates about the same time as A. Stanley rules were offered so it is early. Stanley may have purchased this firm to eliminate some competition which is something they did quite often. (By the way, don't you think Seth Savage would be a great name for an NFL running back)Rule is in good shape. T are no cracks, breaks, etc in either wood leg. The tips are in nice shape. Mfg markings are nice and clear. Both pins are present. Actually this is a pretty nice rule. It does have a significant stain on one side of the bottom leg which will be evident in one of the pictures. T is also a very small chip in the wood at the tail end read more
