Residential melmac was designed by the famous designer Russel Wright for the Northern Industrial Chemical Co. Boston in the early 1950's. It received the "Good Design Award from the Museum of Modern Art in NYC for both 1953 and 1954. With the present touring museum exhibit of the designs of Russel Wright, t is greatly renewed interest in all areas of his work and his designs in plastic are now considered very collectiable. This auction is for 21 pieces of residential in the rare splatterware or end of day colors-not the mottled colors more commonly found. The basic color I would call turquoise with dabs of pink, yellow, white, blue, brown all mixed together. Set includes 5 dinner plates, 5 cups, 5 saucers, 5 7 1/2" lunch plates, and one covered sugar. All pieces except the sugar and its lid are signed "Russel Wright residential by Northern". Unlike the rare cover sugar normally found with the two handles, this one appears to be the form of the small tumbler with a lid manufactured to fit tby becoming a sugar. I believe this to be quite rare and it is pictured on page 76 of " Melmac Dinnerware" by Zimmer and Diagle Jr. Please note all cups have a hole drilled in the end of the handle as shown in the second photo. I do not know if this is original to the set and it may have come with a rack from the manufacturer or was done latter.
