Manufacturer Description
Almost 30 years ago, I had the opportunity to study an early (1835-1865) Bowie knife. This knife had not been treated well: it was missing the handle material, the hilt was battered and the blade was uniformly pitted. Even with all those faults, this was a remarkable knife. The top 40% of the blade was deeply hollow ground, not to an edge, but as if a huge blood groove was intended to go all the way to the point. I have always kept this design in my mind and, about 15 years ago, we made a few handmade pieces we called the A. G. Russell™ Bear Bowie. That was followed in 2003 by the A. G. Russell™ 1861 Bowie, made in the U.S.A., in two different blade lengths and three different handle materials.
