These sculptured, sterling silver MODERNIST EARRINGS were designed and made by RUSSELL SECREST, most likely in the 1950s, when he was one of the artists whose work was showcased at Shop One in Rochester, New York. Shop One was then the home base of famed modernist Ronald Pearson, with whom Secrest worked, and it was one of the first "craftsman" stores featuring artisan-made pieces in a variety of media. In addition to making wearable art -- jewelry -- Secrest also made stabiles, exquisite small silver sculptures. I also found a site online crediting him with the design of a large public fountain in Chicago! I contacted one of the original Shop One members, who said, "You are lucky to be the owner of one of his pieces. The crafts of that period now seem to be showing up in a few antique shows but many people . . . considered them heirlooms and are hanging on to them." Judging by the scarcity of available Secrest pieces, she's quite right. (For more info on Shop One, go to .) I've tried to take pictures from enough angles to convey the deceptively simple/complex design of these earrings. The surfaces keep shifting, morphing, and what at first looks flat is actually subtly curved and flowing. Doubtless an art student could put a name to it; I just call it wonderful. The earrings are 1 3/16" across, and about 1/4" deep. They're stamped SECREST STERLING, and are attached to sterling screwbacks that are in good working order. Overall, they're in excellent condition and they strike a perfect balance between being thick enough not to bend easily and light enough to be worn all day without discomfort. Enjoy, and thanks for looking. Buyer pays $5 shipping and handling, plus insurance. Please use check or PayPal. International buyer, fees will depend on destination and you must use PayPal ONLY.
