THIS ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAP WAS ACTUALLY PRINTED IN 1842 THE BLACK SEA AND SURROUNDING COUNTRIES INVENTORY: Do check my eBay store for more DANUBE items PROVENANCE : THE DANUBE by William Beattie M.D. Illustrated in a series of View taken Expressly for this work by W. H. Bartlett Esq. William Beattie was a 19th century doctor who commissioned the publication of many books of a topographical nature. He was very well traveled and employed illustrators of a very high caliber. For example: William Henry Bartlett , Thomas Allom and James Duffield Harding. He was a graduate of the University if Edinburgh; He was also a member of the Royal College of Phys. London and the History. Institute if France. His work was relevant to a time when people were only minimally aware of the world and world travel was becoming more commonplace. Tfore it was extremely fashionable to have books of a topographical nature, which showed the places of the world that the inartistic traveler was unable to bring back to show to friends. These books also served as an advert for places to travel to, giving people a much broader idea of w they were going. The relevant text was usually comprehensive and explained the culture of the peoples of the world to some extent. All of this made the places depicted all the more intriguing to the 19th century traveler. DATE: This engraving was printed in c.1842. It is NOT a modern day reproduction. CONDITION & REMARKS: Good . Printed on good quality art stock paper. Please see the scan. Splendid topographical views along the River Danube, embracing AUSTRIA , Österreich, BULGARIA CZECH GERMANY , HUNGARY , ROMANIA . SERBIA Servia ( Balkans ). Many show figures in traditional Dress, ancient castles, famous buildings, cathedrals, churches, street scenes and well known landmarks with fascinating architecture. Many of the excellent landscapes feature the River, with boats, timber rafts and fishermen at work. Others show timber rafts being navigated along the Donau. (The boundaries of many places in the Balkans Area having changed over the many years since this picture was drawn.
