Similar reproduction coins are sold in online auctions for up to 10.000 $ A “must” for any serious numismatic collector. The government of Catherine the Great authorized the issue of paper assignats in 1769 to finance military operations in Poland and other countries. The paper currency totaled over 10 million rubles by 1771 and was to be redeemed for copper coinage only, something which would have required a tremendous coinage of standard 5 Kopek pieces. Copper Rubles were proposed to alleviate the stress on the mint, and the arms manufactory at Sestroretsk was dedicated to this massive copper coins striking. Technical problems proved insurmountable, however, the main difficulty being the inability to produce a uniform flan that did not require extensive manual labor as preparation for striking. But the idea for the copper Ruble was abandoned shortly, and at present only three original Sestroretsk Rubles survive (two in the Hermitage Museum and one in the Smithsonian).
