And now it has worked its way onto a Russian nesting doll! The gingerbread house actually opens up as the first part of this nesting doll. From inside spring the hungry "candy witch," the lost children Hansel and Gretel, and finally a gingerbread man that will soon be restored to life, once the witch's spell is broken. This imaginative matryoshka allows children to reenact the classic tale. *** The matryoshka originated in Russia in the 1890s & has become one of the most recognized symbols of Russian culture. *** Made of wood in St Petersburg, Russia & signed by the artist. *** Largest house doll measures 5" tall. All dolls are beautifully painted & have a shiny lacquered finish. *** Production Techniques: Hand Painting/ Decoupage. This doll was carved in the Upper Volga region, then delivered to the workshop in St. Petersburg, Russia. Artists first hand paint the background, then apply various detailed elements, such as faces, which are printed on a very thin vinyl adhesive.
