Nesting dolls are the best known and most popular of all Russian souvenirs. The Russian word for these dolls is "matryoshka", but they are also called matrioshka, matryoshkas, babushka dolls, babushka's doll, matroshka, matryushka, and stacking dolls. I have only taken these apart twice. The third time was today to take the picture. The photos don't really do it justice. I haven't been able to find one like it anyw.. My best friend went to Russia (Moscow) back in 1995 and brought this set back for me. I am not sure what she paid for them, but it is a really unique collection, the detail is really pretty. As you know, the dolls are all hollow except the smallest one (the size of a grain of rice- see last pic!), and can hide one inside another. No. of pieces: 20 Size: Approx. 10" Finish: Gloss Origin: Moscow, Russia Material: Wood (basswood, linden tree) Technique: Painted and varnished They are handturned and painted (Flower Style?) with gorgeous gold, burgandy, white, and blue. Only on the largest doll are pearl-like (?) accents attched to the frame/scarf of the womans face. Each doll is coated with layers of crystal clear lacquer, and the largest one is signed by the artist that made them. Please ask questions! Thanks for looking!
