A characteristic of the Orthodox Church is its use of icons (i.e., holy images). Icons have been in use since the earliest days of the Christian Church. Description: What is being offered for sale an absolutely beautiful icon. Four portraits are incased in metal that I believe is silver. The metal content is not marked. The image is printed on a wooden block and features the Madonna, Jesus and two small angels above the pair. I am not familiar with the Cyrillic alphabet so I don't know what the two impressed symbols means at the top of the icon. Based on the appearance of the front and back, I'm guessing the icon dates from the 20th century, but I am not an expert. The dimensions are 3" by 4 7/8". I found this icon along with several others at an estate sale of a retired military officer outside Washington DC. I will be putting the other icons up within the week.
