The Icon of the Mother of Godof Kazan made its apparition on 1579 at Kazan the capital of Tartar Khaganat recently captured by the Russians. The iconography subject is closely associated with a Greek icon of the Hodigitria Mother of God. By this Icon young people are blessed at the altar. The feasts were established on 22 October (5 November) and 8 (21) July. This Russian Orthodox icon was painted by a modern professional church artist at the Russian town Yaroslavl (not far from Moscow) that is one of the main and old centers of the Russian icon painting. The icon was painted on a wooden board covered with levkas (gesso, special priming). It was painted with egg tempera and gold paints that use the small parts of leaf gold. The style is traditional and strictly follows antique canons of the icon painting. There are two original wooden wedges at the top and the bottom edges of the board to prevent it from wrapping.
