U.S Mint's Commemorative Arts Medal 1984 One (1) oz. gold. Mandated by Congress in 1980, the U.S. Mint struck a series of gold coins in one ounce and 1/2 ounce to compete with the Canadian Maple Leaf and South African Krugerrand bullion coins becoming popular. Explained on page 405 of the U.S. Red Book. This coin was the last one issued in 1984 with Helen Hayes, "First Lady of the Stage" featured. The coin is PCGS rated as MS64.
