I bought this buckle in 1962 from the well-known collector, Mr. George Gorman of Philadelphia, Pa. George purchased a great many items from closed G.A.R. posts. The old actual veterans had all died, and even the SONS of the veterans were gone ! There were no members (or any interested people, it seems) to carry on the traditions of the Grand Army of the Republic. The post's war trophies, furniture, buildings, etc. went into the hands of receivers, and were mostly sold at auction. Mr. Gorman heard of the sale, and got to some of the receivers to buy many items before the auction took place. I got a number of items from him . This piece has a wonderful walnut color ~ It has a rough file finished surface and many casting flaws . The back hooks appear to have been intentionally broken off to mount on a display board or something . ( On the two top corners, very small holes have been drilled thru the buckle, and there is even a piece of old rusty wire through one of the holes. I surmise the wires were used to fasten the buckle to a board or something like that . ) I have it mounted in a nice oak finished shadow box with a glass front. If you don't want the case, I will gladly keep it ~! I took photos using two different color backgrounds in order to show the color of the buckle and all the details as best I could ~ More photos are available if you want them..... If your item is not completely satisfactory when you get it, just send it back . (No justification or reason is required. And I really don't CARE what the guy at your local gun store or antique shop thinks...... Just send i t back!!!) My feedback score is extremely important to me..... All I can tell you for sure is that I have owned most of these items for many, many years.... I am 73 now ~ Its time for me to get rid of the "Retirement Fund" items I have been collecting over the past fifty-one years. Nearly everything I have came from antiques shops, auctions, flea markets, gun shows, and in a few cases, from private "diggers" in the Shenandoah Valley between Winchester and Bristol, Va. I have also spent weeks on Bannerman's Island in New York, and often went to the W. Stokes-Kirk Military Store and Brooks-VanHorn Costume co. in Philadelphia and to many gun shows on the East Coast from New Jersey down to Atlanta. I do not remember the provanance of many items, because "back in the day..." we were not concerned with that . If it was good, we bought it ~ End of story. Now, it is all different I know . Also: The preferred items back then were the mint condition ones, not the "dug up's" ! Why buy a RUSTED musket for $25.00 when you could buy a NEAR MINT one for $75.00? Or a battlefield cavalry saber at $15.00 when a mint one was only $35.00? How the times have changed!! NEVER a "Shipping & Handling" fee ~ I am NOT in the Shipping & Handling business ! Please see "MY OTHER ITEMS". I have LOADS more stuff for sale. . . e-Bay wants you to pay for this item ONLY by PayPal ~ If you wanna talk about this system, get in touch ? Thanks ~
