Beautiful old rare Kirk Repousse footed master salt ca. 1846 to 1861. Unlike any I had ever seen, this salt has three hoofed feet with a C curved feather leg and a fan like peacock tail attaching to the body. It is truly unique in design compared to most Kirk footed salts and has no pattern number indicating to me a much older piece. Kirk did a lot of commissioned pieces matching a client's decor or particular tastes, and very often full matching sets of holloware and serving pieces. This salt is one of two matching that I have listed this week. They are each individual in detail, no sides exactly alike, but retaining the overall look. It has a highly unusual beaded rim making it a stunning piece of work. Amazing to think that it is anyw between 145 to 160 years old. The 11 oz. designation and style of S Kirk & Son marking dates this piece from 1846 to 1861. I believe it to be the earlier because of a lack of pattern number and it's design characteristics. The 11 oz. mark was used by Kirk in the very early years of silver making in Baltimore. A silver standard had not been established in this country and silversmiths were governed by an assay office which collected a tax and governed the content and marking of silver and was established by the Baltimore legislature in 1814. The 11 oz. mark indicates a silver content of 916/1000 which is greater than coin (900/1000) and is less than sterling (925/1000). Kirk continued to use this marking until 1896. The salt stands 1 1/2" tall, just over two inches at it's widest point and 1 1/2" at the beaded rim. It's a nice heavy weight and taller than any of the other Kirk salts I have seen. T was a light monogram in a cartouche area but time and polishing have worn it away. Any collector of fine Kirk silver or fine pre civil war silver would be fortunate to add this dramatic piece to their collection!! You won't see this pattern again!
