I'm not a professional Ebay seller. Rather, I'm a celestial navigator, teacher, and author of books and articles on sextants and celestial navigation. In this endeavor I’ve collected ten excellent sextants used in my research (I wanted to be sure of my conclusions). And now that I no longer need them, I’m reducing this inventory. This Navy Mark III is a C. Plath Navistar that reached the pinnacle of sextant accuracy, with suppliers such as M. Low of New York City and Scientific Instruments of Milwaukee. Low bought theirs from Plath while Scientific Instruments made their own from Plath’s drawings. They both then lapped the arc gear by hand to achieve the stringent Navy specs. This rare MK-III, S/N L-486, was made by M. Low in 1971. It’s accuracy certificate limits the arc error to six seconds from 0 to 105 degrees, but allows 15 seconds at 120 degrees. The entire instrument is in perfect like-new condition, including all shades, mirrors, and the 4X40 scope. The horizon mirror is the half-silvered traditional mirror. The arc light uses two AA batteries and works fine, but the switch is a bit touchy, as all sextants with this lighting design seem to be. The instrument comes in a sturdy mahogany case with spare light bulbs, cleaning brush, adjusting tool, batteries, and above all – spare horizon and index mirrors (imagine what they’re worth with their Navy optical specs). It will be packed very well, and shipped free anywhere in the U.S.A.
