The USS Preble has an interesting history. Commissioned in 1920, it served in the Atlantic and Pacific. In 1927 PREBLE was assigned patrol duty in strife-torn China, taking aboard American and foreign refugees and escorting merchant vessels in the Yangtze and Whangpo Rivers. On several occasions Chinese factions fired on PREBLE from shore, but there were no casualties.This is a registered letter posted on the ship in on June 23, 1927. Upon arrival in Manila the letter was sealed with 3 post office seals (OX7) and mailed on July 21 to Washington, DC, arriving on August 20, 1927. Perhaps not in the best condition, but probably the only such use you will find.
