In the AZUCHI MOMOYAMA period, wooden lacquered boxes like today's were produced and bento would be eaten during a HANAMI Sakura viewing or a tea party. In the peaceful and prosperous time of the EDO period, bento culture spread and became more refined. Travelers and sightseers would carry a simple KOSHI BENTO or waist bento. DESCRIPTION: This example is a four tiered lacquer SAGEJUBAKO box of rectangular section, the traditional shape for a japanese portable lunch box, with a carrying case, a JUBAKO of four food boxes of square section with rounded corners, a lid used as a tray, a footed tray, a rectangular drawer and a two sections contenaire of TOKURI, or sake "bottles" which missed . The exterior decoration is executed and finely embellished in two color of gold and silver HIRAMAKI-E a low relief inlaid, details in polychrome TOGIDASHI, with additions in KEUCHI and red lacquer over a KURO NURI a black lacquer ground. It is embellished with a continuous design rising from the base and spreading over the lid, filling almost the whole surface and showing TAKE, bamboo, branches and leaves, among SAKURA cherry blossom, all of these small, but complicated, patterns are skillfully combined and enhanced. TAKE, bamboo is emblematic of fidelity, flexibility, constancy and longevity and symbolizes fortitude of character. The canes of bamboo represent the essentiel force and flexibility in the discipline of BUTO, and symbolizes also the masculinity of the SAMURAI. While SAKURA cherry blossom, symbolizes bravery and the desire for purity that were cherished in the heart of a SAMURAI. This flower may be related to an old japanese belief that the finest of humanity was the SAMURAI as the finest of flowers is the cherry. These flowers placed around the lid is neither naïve nor plain, it represent a kind of ultimate, a beauty that is not however severe. On the contrary, it has a faintly gentle mood evocative of a sense of the compassion of the warrior. Both interior of box and lid in red lacquer. Shoulders and rim in FUNDAME, a matt gold lacquer ground. The design is expressed with great strength and beauty, carefully worked in delicate manner and finely decorated with accurate details.
