A museum quality oil painting on artist board by a foremost New York artist ALEXANDER BOWER (1875-1952) . It shows a flotilla of sailboats along the open sea accompanied by the usual number of feathered friends. Painting itself is of size 12x17 inches, not counting exceptional quality wooden frame, ab. four inches wide. Painting is artist signed at lower right hand and in excellent quality, never restored or inpainted. The frame had several tiny nicks at the corners, but now fully restored and not visible. It was deaccessioned from the Springfield MA Art Museum and its authenticity is fully guaranteed. New York born artist, Bower studied at the Penna. Academy of Fine Arts. He lived most of his life at the Cliff Island in Maine. Fascinated by the open sea, many of his paintings are seascapes with views of Cape Elizabeth and Cliff Island. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club, Boston Society of Watercolor Painters, and an associate member of the Academy of Design. He exhibited - among others - at the Carnegie Institute, the National Academy of Design, the Chicago Art Institute, and others. His works are in permanent collections of Butler Art Institute, Portland Museum, and Art Museum Rockland, Maine.
