January 14th, 2011 marks what would have been the 100th birthdayof Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins. To ring in the Sailor Jerry Centennial,Sailor Jerry Rum has created a series of limited edition bottle labels featuring the legendary flash art of the greatest tattoo artist of all time – Sailor Jerry. Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins was a true innovator. He expanded the color palette of modern day tattooing with the creation of purple ink, and his custom-built tattoo machines are still revered today. His independent spirit and desire to elevate tattooing made him one of the first American tattoo artists to correspond directly with the Japanese tattoo masters, which led to the development of Sailor Jerry’s own unique, artistic style that changed American tattooing forever. Sailor Jerry’s work, which tells the raw, layered story of war and heartache, is permanently etched on the bodies of thousands of men and continues to inspire modern tattoo artistry today. His story is captured in the documentary Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry which explores the roots of American tattooing through the life of its most iconoclastic figure. To honor the life and legacy of Sailor Jerry on what would have been his 100th year, the rum that bears his name will be available in three new limited edition bottles: • Bald Eagle: Patriotism was a common theme for the fighting men that visited Sailor Jerry’s shop on Hotel Street in Honolulu and nothing symbolized this more than the image of a bald eagle along with a proud shield. Amuletic in nature, these designs served to foster strength and power into the hearts and minds of men ready for war. • Mermaids: Consisting of a schooner ship – usually a memento of a successful trip around Cape Horn – surrounded by two sweetheart-style mermaids and balanced by two flags, this design harkens back to a time when “ships were made of wood and the men were made of iron!” • Sparrows : Originally the mark of choice for mutineers, the swallow tattoo came to symbolize a seaman that had traveled 5,000 nautical miles. The more sparrows a sailor bared, the more miles he had traveled. Seen as the first sign that land was near, the sparrow was also deemed as a good luck charm usually tattooed on a sailor’s chest.
