Tall octavo format 170 x 102 mm. Text block of Gothic type with hand colored initials in blue and Salmon heightened in Gold. Surrounding the text block on the verso of this leaf are multiple engraved scenes against a crible background. Among the engravings are images of St. Nicholas, St. Denis and demons attacking a man. Recto, the text block surrounded by images of Large metalcut depiction of the creation of woman at the bottom, St. Peter & Paul, The Annunciation & others. Very slightly trimmed at the top. Otherwise in Good Antiquariat Condition. Copy of old 19th Century Parisian catalogue description included in pictures (NO copy is included with this auction - leaf Only). Describing the beautiful and rare gothic impressions by Symphorian Barbler for Jehan de Brie. A Book of Hours is the most common type of surviving medieval illuminated manuscript. Each Book of Hours is unique, but all contain a collection of texts, prayers & psalms, along with appropriate illustrations, to form a convenient reference for Christian worship and devotion. In its original form, a Book of Hours would list the appropriate texts for each litugical hour of the day. However, over time, other useful references were often added, espcially calendars of the religious and secular year along with the prayers and masses required for certain holy days. The typical medieval manuscript called a book of hours is an abbreviated breviary, the book containing the litugy recited in cloistered monasteries; The Books of Hours were composed for use by lay people who wished to incorporate elements of monasticism into their devotional life. Reciting the hours tpyically centered upon the recitation or singing of a number of psalms, accompanied by set prayers. This book of Hours contained: The Hours for the use of Roman along with ancient histories of the apocalipse miracles of the virgin, and the corealm of the world and the sun and moon and many other things. And is illustrated with fine metalcut borders with floral, historical and mythological subjects surrounding the text. Original coloring and gold highlights of the early 16th Century. Surrounded by veronicas veil, annunciation to the shepards etc. and death supporting twings and live fantastic hybrids upon a bulls head. 2 fantastic birds amidst intwined a floral design.The Story of Saint Apollonia Saint Apollonia was born in the third century and lived in Alexandria, Egypt. Apollonia spent her whole life preaching the word of God. She took a big risk doing this because Christians were being persecuted during the reign of Emperor Philip. Even into old age, Apollonia still preached and bravely risked her life to visit Christians in prison to comfort them. In 249 AD she was captured and brought before a court. When the judge asked her name, she replied, "I am a Christian and I love to serve the true God". People who were trying to force her to give up her faith then tortured her. All her teeth were smashed with pinchers and then knocked out. Even this painful ordeal did not shake her faith, when she was given the choice of rejecting Jesus or being burned alive she jumped into the burning fire herself. When the pagans saw how heroic she was many were converted to Christianity. A church was erected in her honour in Rome, it no longer exists but the square w it stood is still called after her "Piazza Sant' Apollonia". The Catholic Church celebrates Saint Apollonia's Feast Day on 9th February. Because of the torture Saint Apollonia endured people frequently pray her when they have a toothache and hence she has become the patron saint of dentistry.
