During the 1950's, Japanese sake sets were often given as gifts by the United States armed forces stationed in Japan. My father sent a set to my Mother while stationed in Japan in the '50's. (This is not the set.) The colored band at the top of the sake jar and the band at the bottom of the jar are of a dark red color accented with gold designs. The cups are also painted with the dark red and gold along the top and bottom rim of each cup. The design on the jar and the cups is of young Geisha Girls and War Lords of various ages along with Japanese writing. The cups each have a lithograph photo of a Geisha Girl. The photo can be seen when the cup is held up to the light. My picture of the cup with the photo is not very clear; in the hand, it is much brighter. The set has no chips, cracks, crazing, etc. The marking on the bottom of the jar is in Japanese (I do not know what it represents) along with the number 37239. Additional information: Sake jar - 5 7/8 inches, from the bottom of jar to the top of the pouring spout The cups - 1 1/2 inches When a liquid is poured from the spout, the bird "whistles"
