Up for is a rare, very high quality of craftsmanship salesman sample of a J.D. Adams and Company Indianapolis, IN pull behind (horse or steam engine) Leaning Wheel Road Grader !!!! Very precision made in every way I'm not sure we could duplicate it today with all the gears and gear boxs hand tapping for all the machine screws and casting of all these small parts. I'm guessing this sample is from 1915 to 1920 by the information I was able to find. Please see below I'll share what history I could find. I do not know what model # grader this is for. Not marked. The carrying case is a very stiff leather that is rivited together with the J.D. Adams plate on the top The Grader is 22" long 10" high and the blade is 12" long Grader itself weights approx 12 lbs The case with everything inside weighs approx 30 lbs and is 28" x 10" x 12" All functions on this sample are accurate and functional to every detail as a full size machine. I cannot begin to describe the craftsmanship put into this sample. Everything is put together with machine screws, the blade raises and lowers by turning the 2 big wheels at the back you can do 1 side or both sides at a time, Blade also pivots to the left and right at the rear when you push down on the foot pedal and the smaller steering type wheel is turned, Pull back on the handle and spin the crank by the foot pedal and the whold blade will pivot to discharge out the left or right side.push the handle back in and the blade will lock in place.Turn the crank in the middle of the 2 big wheels and the front wheels will lean which every way you turn the crank. The crank on the left hand side will shift the whole back end to the left or the right depending on which way it is turned, I suppose this was to keep the weight on the up hill side of the grader. The crank on the right hand side will make the rear wheels lean left or right. Items that need attention: I don't believe the string on the pulley and spindle that makes the blade shift angles is origional old one had probably dry rotted away The shaft that spins that makes the blade pivot left to right is missing the u joint coupling (please see picture) The handle on the back left that shifts the rear end from side to side is broke off w it should turn back up another 1/2 inch (does not affect operation) The springs on the top bar going to the blade are not origional, I put those on for the pictures, This was to assist with the lifting of the heave origional 14 ft blade Right hand side coupling on bottom of blade lifting arm is missing the bottom of the coupling t is a small wire holding this coupling together The 3 holes in the bottom of the blade I believe once had 3 bars sticking out of them for what purpose i do not know, I have 1 bar but 2 are missing (see photo) The other items pictured I'm not sure of their purpose but they fit exactly in the case and they are : Ballbearings in the leather case with a leather with 4 holes to set them out. The only thing I could think is that it was to show what type of bearings are in the wheels T are six weights in the green can with the tin lids all the weights are marked with a number just like scale weights and they slide onto the brass piece with the string T are 2 machined brass pulleys on metal rods I have no idea their purpose, I have looked this grader over and cannot find anyw they would attach to. If anyone has any information on this or the J.D. Adams company please contact me I would be interested to know . The best I can find out is that the J.D.Adams & Co., J.D. Adams Mfg. Co. was established in Indianapolis, In. in about 1915. They eventually had manufacturing plants in Richmond and Ft. Wayne, Ind. and several sales outlets around the midwest. They also sold quite a few pieces of equipment overseas. I have found 1920's tow-behind graders in Models #6/#8 and #12's. If you are interested and want...
