Offered with absolutely no apologies is this rather unique Woolen Fabric Textile Salesman Sample from Pacific Mills, Lawrence, Massachusetts. The contents of the sample actually showcases the steps of how the wool fabric is made from the collection of the greasy wool as it is sheared from the sheep right through to the finished dyed fabric. T are ten primary or basic colors plus the staple gray cloth which is actually a cream color cloth rendered prior to the dying process. Fabric and wool are immaculate. The fabric has not faded, the wool is clean. Fabric has not faded and shows absolutely no evidence moth worms or moth holes. The top and bottom are made from a single one plank board. The lid's sides are rounded, with mitered corners and fastened to the top with what appear to be square nails. The sides of the bottom are made the same way. It has a glass top allowing you to see the separate compartments depicting the fabric making process. The left side of the box has three single slot brass screws which allows the factory or salesman to change the samples or let the customer feel the cloth. The bottom of the box has a primative "117" painted in the corner. Both top and bottom have the Pacific Mills, Lawrence Massachusetts logo painted in gold leaf, and edged in black. The covered box is 17-1/2 inches long, 12-3/4 inches wide and 2-1/2 inches deep. Glass display area is 15-3/4 inches long and 11-1/2 inches wide. As you can see from the photos, the salesman's sample is in pristine condition. Photos are taken in natural daylight without flash. Glass is crack free and scratch free. This belonged to the Rt. Reverand Msgr. William W. Ridgeway, STD who was the brother of one of our parishioners. He served many Catholic Church parishes in Maine and, at one time many years ago, was the priest at St. Georges Parish, Falmouth, Maine. It is her wish that the proceeds of this auction be made payable directly to the North Pownal (Maine) United Methodist Church. Tfore sales tax will not apply to this item. I HAVE RECENTLY DISCOVERED ... that the Pacific Mills was producing woolen fabric in LAWRENCE MASSACHUSETTS in the 1850's. Sometime in 1904, the name of the mill was changed.
