Up for bid is an ivory eskimo ice axe, used approximately 2,000 to 5,000 years ago. The piece has original artwork by Salman Rashidi.
The measurements are 10 3/4" in length, 3 1/2" in height and 1 1/4" in depth The name of the piece is Arriving Full-rigged whaling ship "California", "drying sails" after returning from her long cruise. The average whaling voyage lasted three years. This scene depicts a typical day in New Bedford harbor in 1846. Men rolling barrels aside to make room to unload the cargo from the newly arrived ship. Other men "fitting" barrels to go on the whaling vessels that are going on their journey. The big building is a "sail loft", w sails w made and repaired. Although Salman Rashidi graduated as an electrical engineer, he has made a successful career creating art. Something he wanted to persue since he was a child. He is the recipient of an International Maritime Award from Mystic Seaport Museum, also 2 national awards from Mystic Seaport Scrimshanders in Connecticut. He was commissioned in 1997 by The Associated Press to scrimshaw an ivory centerpiece for a plaque given to Walter Cronkite for a Lifetime Achievement Award.
