This is a one of a kind , full size , unbroken , museum quality , eskimo sled runner made from walrus ivory
The wooden base is made from African Cocobolo and ivory
The dimensions of the ivory piece are 16 3/4" in length, 1 3/4" in height, and 3/4" in depth
The title of the piece is " Boston Harbor at Dusk "
This scene is a depiction of the late 19th Century, Boston fishing market. The natural color of the ivory was carefully accentuated to create a dramatic evening scene. Men are hoisting a large bucket of freshly caught fish out of a Dory. Fishing schooner "Eagle" of Essex, Massachusetts ("pinky" type of schooner, smaller size of its kind) is docking in this scene. Also shown is the whaling bark (originally a ship) "Lancer" of Newburyport, Massachusetts arriving at the harbor from her long whaling cruise.
Schooners became more popular in America during the 18th Century and are still used today. They were the work horse of the industry (can be compared to a truck in our generation), and served as a whaler, fishing boat or cargo carrier (fishing schooners often raced to the fishing market to have the first pick at the buyers). The popularity of this type of sailing vessel was based on its simplicity and the ability to sail with as few as seven men.
Although Salman Rashidi graduated as an electrical engineer, he hasmade a successful career creating art. Something he wanted to persuesince he was a child. He is the recipient of an International Maritime Award from Mystic Seaport Museum, also 2 national awards from Mystic Seaport Scrimshanders in Connecticut. He was commissioned in 1997 by The Associated Press to scrimshaw an ivory centerpiece for a plaque given to Walter Cronkite for a Lifetime Achievement Award.
