This is a big chunk of fossil walrus ivory with original scrimshaw by Salman Rashidi. This is the part of the ice axe that was held and was broken from the rest of the ice axe naturally.
The base is made of cocobola. Dimensions with wooden base are 4 3/8" length, 3" height, 1 6/8" depth The name of this piece is "Rugged Beauty" Whaling bark "Concordia", under shortened canvas in a breeze. Concordia was built at Mattapoisett, MA and registered in New Bedford in 1867. One of the more sleek designs from Mattapoisett in the 19th Century. This scene is a depiction of an American Whaler sailing deep into the Atlantic O cean in search of whales. As Whales became more scarce in New England waters, whalers depended on Arctic water. Bark Concordia was wrecked in the Arctic in 1871. Although Salman Rashidi graduated as an electrical engineer, he hasmade a successful career creating art. Something he wanted to pursuesince he was a child. He is the recipient of an International Maritime Award from Mystic Seaport Museum, also 2 national awards from Mystic Seaport Scrimshanders in Connecticut. He was commissioned in 1997 by The Associated Press to scrimshaw an ivory centerpiece for a plaque given to Walter Cronkite for a Lifetime Achievement Award.
