SALOMON VAN ABBE: Portrait of Neville Chamberlain SALOMON VAN ABBE (1883-1955) A.R.E., R.B.A. A Portrait of Rt. Hon. Neville Chamberlain* Superb quality original etching. Signed in the plate top left, and by hand in pencil bottom right below the plate line. T is a number "7" written in pencil at bottom left corner, referring to the edition size. Date - late 1930's (?). The document he is holding could be the "Munich Agreement". Platemark area size: 12 inches x 9 inches. Good wide margins beyond, the full sheet measures 18.5 x 11.5 inches Condition/Technical : Excellent. A rich, clear and crisp impression with lovely tonal contrast. Printed on Whatman laid paper. No problems whatsoever. Superb condition. THE ARTIST: Salomon van Abbé (born Amsterdam , 31 July 1883, died London , 28 February 1955), a well-listed artist. He was a painter, etcher and illustrator of books and magazines. He was born in the Netherlands but moved with his family to England when he was 5 years old and became a naturalised citizen. He added the accent to become van Abbé. He studied at London County Council Schools, the People’s Palace, Toynbee Hall , Central School of Art and at the LCC School of Photoengraving and Lithography at Bolt Court w he met Edmund Blampied , Robert Charles Peter and John Nicolson , all fellow etchers.
