A porcelain figurine of a resting lion by Edme Samson of Paris, modelled on a Meissen original. The blue underglaze mark is a diagonal cross with a line through it which was the mark used by Samson on such pieces. (The line through the cross is not to be confused with the system used by some other porcelain houses to denote second quality - in the case of Samson this is his mark). There is also an impressed diagonal cross on the base. It is difficult to date this piece but it may be from the early part of the 20th century. Measuring 6 3/4 inches (17 cm) long x 3 3/8 inches (8.5 cm) wide x 3 1/2 inches (8.9 cm) high. The piece is delicately modelled and the fur painted with fine calligraphic brush strokes on the mane, paws and body of the lion; the painting of the eyes and whiskers is extremely nice and is in keeping with the character of the creature.
