A four -page handwrit ten and signed letter by the great 19th century explorer, big game hunter, soldier, engineer and writer, Samuel Baker. The letter was written to the British diplomat and Japanologist William Aston. 'Yokohama 26 May 8 1 - My dear Mr Aston, We leave tomorrow morning for the City of Peking for San Francisco and must say goodbye by letter to Mrs Aston and yourself. We hear also that Mr and Mrs French and Miss French are at Kobe and that he is in bad health; pray give our very kind regards to them, and we trust the change of air will restore Mr French who I know must have suffered from the vile atmosphere of that badly ventilated court in Shanghai which would have suffocated me in a week. We were very glad to see Mr and Mrs ---- here and we went with them to Myanoshita for four days. Etchigoya also arrived here; and the old Kobe faces were increased by the appearance of Mr Groom. We have been carefully adding to our collection up to the last moment, until I find that forty six large cases have left, or are closed and booked for England. There is a report that you were about to return to the Legation. I hope not, as Kobe agrees with you so well, and I do not think the moat at Tokyo adds to the salubrity. I and Mrs Baker send much love to Mrs Aston and best remembrances to yourself. Please convey my warm regards to read more
