Utamaro (1750 - 1806) Japanese Woodblock reprint A Rare Opportunity- Check out these offerings. This unique combination of high quality, old reprints and fantastic provenance will not be repeated. Collect old prints with the Muller provenance and delve into the exotic world of old Japan. How were these prints done? These beautiful woodblock reprints were done exactly as the originals. An artist carved a wood block, one for each color, and hand printed each print one color at a time. These old reprints are sought after for their meticulous attention to detail and color, rivaling the originals. Unlike the brighter, souvenir prints seen on the market these fine reprints show the attention to detail and careful color choices intended to exactly replicate the old originals. Detail of this Print Samurai and Beauty Rare reprint from the studio of Hashiguchi Goyo Hashiguchi Goyo Reprints- Tonight, we have a very special offer of reprints from the studio of 20 th century master Hashiguchi Goyo. These prints are from an old collection of full size reprints produced in the late teens or early 1920's right before Goyo's death. These are very important prints, in that Goyo's fine reprints are considered to be the highest quality reprints produced in the 20th century. Goyo is the undisputed master of the 20th century shin-hanga movement. A secondary part of his career was reprinting beautiful old ukiyo-e prints from the golden age of the print period. In 1920, much of Goyo's artistic work was devoted to creating these incredible woodblock reprints from the golden age of ukiyo-e. Each print was painstakingly copied from an original and stamped with the Goyo rectangular seal (see example below). Line by line, color by color, the prints were recreated in Goyo's studio to perfectly emulate these masterworks of ukiyo-e. Goyo took pride in this work and the release of his reprints was met with great acclaim. Today, original Goyo reprints are highly sought after by collectors and extremely rare to find. Tonight, we are pleased to offer this wonderful group from the Muller collection. Comments- Charming print depicting a young samurai holding a pipe and a beauty flirtatiously playing with his kimono sleeve. A lovely design. Artist & Signature- Utamaro (1750 - 1806)
