Extraordinarily rare Texas drugstore glass bottle. Embossing on front reads "F.K. Alteyer & Son, Druggists, San Antonio, Texas". About 3 and 3/4 inches. It was extraordinarily difficult to photograph this piece because the glass has turned opaque. In the second photograph I am including the bottle alongside a rubbing I made by holding a piece of paper over the bottle and gently running a crayon on the surface of the paper. On the third photo I held the bottle against the light. There is a tiny rim chip at the mouth. Otherwise, even surface wear from having been underground for over a hundred years (feels rough to the touch). A true piece of Texas history. From the Texas Handbook: KALTEYER, GEORGE HENRY (1849–1897). George Henry Kalteyer, chemist, pharmacist, and industrialist, was born on July 14, 1849, in New Orleans, the son of Frederick William and Henrietta (Leonardt) Kalteyer. Frederick Kalteyer, from Dillingburg, Grand Duchy Nassau, Germany, emigrated to San Antonio after having lived in New Orleans, Galveston, and Boerne. Reportedly, while he was in Galveston in the 1830s, Frederick opened the first soda-water business in Texas. On moving to San Antonio in 1857, he founded the Eagle Drug Store on Military Plaza. When George became a junior partner, the name was changed to F. Kalteyer and Son Druggists. George studied chemistry
