SANDING BLOCK , LOTHROP PATENT, NEAT AND SCARCEYou asked for it and I listened. Due to numerous requests I am going to list my extensive collection of U.S. patented sanding blocks. , finally, after a long wait is what you have been waiting for. Seriously, this is one of my favorite mini-collections. It is astounding that U.S. ingenuity came up with 7 patentable methods to hold sandpaper to a block of wood or metal. Some of the methods are quite ingenious. As I mentioned, I have 7 different blocks and each has a patented feature to hold the paper secure. I like this collectiona lot and believe that you will also. You can imagine how long it took me to find all of these and you can have them all in one week. Some of these I purchased quite inexpensively but a couple I paid more than you could ever believe, certainly more than I can recoup, but then I had the fun of owning, showing and fooling around with these for many years. Now it's your turn. A once in a lifetime chance .This sanding block has "C.M. LOTHROP NORWOOD. MASS. PAT'D MAY 11-80 CANADA APR. 24-80" engraved on the bottom of one of the brass holding strips. This was patent #227438 issued in 1880 to Charles Lothrop. Wood block is about 3" by 5". I believe the block is made of Mahogany and the circular knob on top is Beech or Maple but I am not real good at wood identification.
