SANTA CLARA PUEBLO POTTERY
SIGNED BY NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIST: DUSTY NARANJO This scraffito Santa Clara seed pot was created by well respected Native American Artist, Dusty Naranjo. Dusty's trademark horse themed piece is an impressive example of Sienna firing. The artist has perfected an intermediate firing process that produces beautiful chocolate brown and sienna colors. Dusty uses the sgrafito technique of using steel blades to scrape through the outer dark layer into the slip beneath that is still reddish in color. Cutting deeper exposes the tan of the clay body. This hand coiled piece measures approximately 2.75" width diameter x about 2.25" tall. This is an elegant piece with a smooth stone polish and is free from any chips or cracks. Dusty Naranjo was born into the Santa Clara Pueblo of New Mexico in 1968. She is the daughter of Tito and Bernice Naranjo. Dusty comes from a very long line of accomplished potters, including her grand- mother Rose Naranjo and her aunt Jody Folwell. Her brother, Forrest, is a very famous potter as well. Dusty's mother, Bernice Suazo Naranjo, is her main influence in creativity and perfection of form and style. Her pottery is best described as contemporary Santa Clara, but she pots in the traditional manner. She gathers her own clay, polishes it with a smooth stone and uses traditional firing methods. Dusty's work is featured in numerous publications including: Hayes & Blom’s "Southwest Pueblo Pottery: Anasazi to Zuni"and "Pueblo Pottery: 750 Artist Biographies" by Gregory Schaaf. She has an MA in Art Therapy. Dusty's work continues to increase in collector's value. FREE SHIPPING!
