UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BIDDERS ONLY. USA SHIPPING ONLY. Up for auction is one Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Lantern Globe. This is an extended base, clear, embossed globe. The globe is embossed with letters "AT&SFRY" The letters measure just over 5/8" high and are thick looking. Don't confuse this with the rather common AT&SFRy tall globes out t with thin letters. I have been tracking Santa Fe Railroadiana on eBay since the late 1990's and have never seen this type of globe in an auction. The globe measures about 5-1/2" high. The 'box' that the letters are in measures 4"X 1". I couldn't find my Santa Fe lantern book by Wm. A. Cunningham but it has the information about this globe in it. I think this globe was a 6 out of 6 rarity on his scale and these were made shortly after the turn of the 20th century if I recall correctly it said t were only three examples known to exist. I can find no makers mark, I see no cracks or chips just some minor use flakes on the top and bottom w glass meets metal. T are two lines that run down each side of the globe as if it were two pieces when it was made. Provenance: The globe surfaced in the railroad town of Raton, New Mexico. At one time a bustling Santa Fe terminal, the railroad came to the area in the late 1870's. This globe came out of a Santa Fe Route lantern frame, it had been sitting in a residential garage for many, many years. The family that it came from had occupied the same house since the turn of the 20th century. I acquired the lantern/globe directly from the antique dealer who purchased the above estate in the 1990's, I knew of the lantern but had no way to purchase it until the estate was sold. It has never been through the collectors circuit and had been covered by 90 years of dust when I got it. I am a 3rd generation railroader and have been collecting RR stuff since I was a kid when I found my first lantern in my grandfathers basement. This globe is such a rare item though, it really belongs in a premier collection w it can be protected and cherished. Not just stuck in a safe like it is now. All of you serious collectors out t check your Santa Fe globes, you will be hard pressed to find one of these in your collection. Shipping will be by UPS for this auction or if the buyer is close to Raton I may consider meeting somew close for the transaction. Email with any questions, or comments. Thanks....
