Santa's Fantasy: Once, Just Once! Do you believe, too? Do you ever think that Santa might get tired of those old, smelly reindeers? That he would want to "step out of the box," just once? And order up the ride of his very long life?I wondered about that, too.And this is what came to me: Santa is shilloetted against the full moon, as in the classic pictures. But as you turn the gourd around, you see that his sleigh is pulled, not by reindeer (especiallly that smug little Rudough!), no NOT THE REINDEER......... BRING ON THE DRAGONS! Santa's sleigh is being pulled by a brace of dragons, all purple and green and blue and enlivened with gold, the way good fantasy dragons should be! They dance across the back of his robe, and rise to the back of his hood. The dragons closest to Santa are larger than the dragons on the hood, so you get the effect of distance. Everything is backlit with blue and white and gold, because this is Santa's Fantasy. At the bottom of his robe, I drew a castle, freehand with the hot pen, and some reindeer, and a reindeer stable. They don't look too sad at being left behind, do they? One of the reindeer has a red nose. The Santa shilloette is burned into the gourd, and then I rubbed gold onto it, so it lookes hammered and burnished. The background of the face of the Santa is the natural gourd color. It shows the delicate mottling that a dry gourd achieves. Santa's beard and the trim on his robe has been textured slightly. All the other painting allows the gourd itself to show thru. Many of the shadows in the scene are textured in with my woodburning tool, which gives the whole scene an etched look, much as the original was. The etching and shading took a little while, but I feel it was worth the extra effort. and important to the whole effect. Santa's stem has been bound with old cording, and antiqued, for a different look. If you want the rusty jingle bell and the grungy tag, as I do on my other Santas, just let me know, and you may certainly have them. The base of this Santa is the actual gourd bottom, turned inside out. You can see the little pointed stem which starts the formation that holds the seeds inside the gourd. This was a very unusual gourd, by the way. I only have a few of them, and I was sure to save the seeds, because it makes such an unusual Santa figure. T is a lot to see on this gourd, so I've listed it with extra pictures. On the bottom, this gourd is signed and dated, by me. I've been wanting to do something about Santa and dragons for a long time! It took a long time to get everything just right, so it is the only thing I have listed this week. How I do these: I grow the gourds. As they are growing I go around and stand them on their bottoms, so they can grow up to be birdhouses, and Santas and such. It takes a year for the gourds to grow, and another year for them to dry out completely. This gourd is about three years old. Once the gourds are dry, they are totally permanent, unless you drop them real hard or soak them in water. You can read more about the gourds on my "About ME" page. I first draw the design freehand with a pencil. T is much thought and erasing Then I redraw the design using a hot woodburning tool, sort of like a hot pen. (900 degrees F....ouch!) Then the gourd is stained with oil stains. I use the oil stain because it is translucent, and allows the natural finish of the gourd to come through. The oil color is permanent, and will not fade. l I like to see the blemishes and discolorations on a gourd because it tells me that the gourd has survived the onslaught of many insects and pests. Gourds are the survivors of the garden. I like that!Several times throughout this process, I spray the gourd with a matt sealer. When all is done, I spray again. Details, details: This gourd is quite large It is a about 13.6 inches around, and 14 inches tall, not counting the stem. The box w...
