Fine� Santee Sioux Moccasins, Floral Designs, c1870� Venetian� Seed Beads, Yellow Pigment Fine� Santee Sioux bead and pigment decorated moccasins. Hard sole attached with sinew; native tanned deer hide uppers with separate attached� high cuff with interlaced deerskin ankle wrap. Velvet panels thread� appliquéd� supporting ankle wrap; long� tongue cut in one piece with uppers. Glass seed beads in� symmetrical,� stacked floral pattern incorporating� contour bordered� rosettes or carnations, tulips, leaves and other devices. Bead colors include irregular and opaque light blue, pink and greasy yellow, medium blue and deep blue. Translucent faceted bead colors are red,� burgundy and gold-yellow. Some of the medium blue beads are faceted. Commercial thread embroidery; no metallic or pressed porcelain beads. Pigment is a powdery bright yellow, now much worn but still quite visible. My attribution is Santee Sioux but could possibly be Plains Cree or Plains Metis. There was significant interaction and� intermarriage� as these people were pushed west onto the plains. These are early second half 19th� century c1860-1880; western Minnesota, northern Nebraska or the Dakotas. They are in near pristine, native-use authentic condition.
