Art from the remote and colorful Mexican village that collectors call "the best kept secret in the art world". MATA ORTIZ, the source of some of the world's best pottery, is one of the finest ceramics in the world. Inspired by the Paquime (Apache Native Americans) the potters of Mata Ortiz create contemporary works of art, often incorporating Mimbres designs shared by the Native American cultures. Meticulously handmade in the ancient coil method - no potter's wheel - fired over open ground - not in a kiln. Each piece a unique work of art using clay from the same beds harvested by prehistoric artisans. Nearby pre-Columbian Paquime/Casas Grandes was a vital pottery-making site on the ancient trade route from Southern Mexico to the Anasazi culture in Northern New Mexico. Mata Ortiz pottery is certainly one of the finest and most innovative ceramics in the world. With an olla as their canvas, the potters of Mata Ortiz have imprinted on them not only re-creations of ancestral symbols, but they have searched within their own spirit and creativity and have been able to conceive a unique artistic language, creative and original.
