Sargent No. 409 Smoother Plane, Type 2, ca 1902-08, Rosewood Knob and Tote Sargent No. 409 Smoother Plane, Type 2, ca 1902-08, Rosewood Knob and ToteThe original black finish is about 90%.The dating is based on the plane's characteristics of right hand thread on the depth adjuster, the Granville Wright patent date (Feb 3, 91) on the lateral lever, the thin sided body casting, and the dates of the type 2 logo on the cutter.The rosewood knob and tote are flawless, with no splits or regluing. The tote has a striking area of contrast between heartwood and sapwood.The original cutter has a respectable 1-1/16" remaining below the slot. It is sharp, but the bevel angle is a little steep. This is a great example of a plane ready to work, already into its second century. Please allow me to invoice you before you pay .
