As many pipe enthusiasts know, the Sasieni "Rustic" pattern pipes were not created by the process of sandblast but by the work of skilled carvers. This lovely "Lombard" pot is a wonderful show piece for the process. The bowl exhibits a fine vertical grain pattern all the way around, and the shank was carved in a more diagonal pattern sweeping up and to the rear. The nomenclature, all of which is on the bottom, is a bit thin but mostly legible with the "Made in England" stamp in the football pattern followed by what remains of the post war Sasieni script over a more readable "Four Dot Rustic" over an equally legible "Lombard" stamp. The nomenclature is the only issue, as the rest of the pipe is in very fine condition. T is no damage to the wood anyw, with no burn-outs, no dents, splits or missing chips. The original bit, with no tooth marks, displays the Four Dot logo without the fading toward white which is to be expected on older pipes, and remains in the original robin's egg blue, which leads me to believed that the pipe was largely kept out of the light. The pipe measures 5 7/8 inches in length, the bowl is 1 5/8 inches in height, with an outer diameter of 1 9/16 inches and a chamber diameter of 7/8 inches. A successful international bidder should await an invoice detailing the cost of the shipping and insurance surfaces he prefers.
