It was in 1876 when the first Achille Savinelli opened a pipe shop in Milan , Italy . By 1924 Achilles' son Carlo was making pipes in the back of his father's shop bearing the family name. After WWII, the second Achille (grandson of the founder) decided it was time to expand the brand beyond Italy 's shores, and thus the Savinelli pipe entered into pipe lore and history. Using only the finest grades of Sardinian and Corsican briar which has been air cured for a minimum of 15 years, every Savinelli pipe is made with great care and pride in the knowledge that each pipe will eventually make someone very proud and satisfied. The Savinelli Autograph line of pipes has achieved a deserved reputation as one of the most desirable smokers of all time . However, whether it is the least expensive model or the highest grade straight grain, the Savinelli stamp on a pipe is your assurance of quality. Estate - Savinelli Autograph Freehand #4 Smoking Pipe in Excellent Condition(SAV660G) This is a pre-owned Savinelli Autograph in LIKE NEW conditon . These pipes have a wonderful reputation as the top of the line for Savinelli Freehand pipes . They are made by hand by the tops carvers and designers at Savinelli ; using only the biggest and best Plateau Briar. These pipes are fully Handmade !! From the choice of the briar (only the largest and very best briar blocks are put aside as possible Autograph pipes). Not only is the bowl hand done by a top pipe maker; but the stem is handcut for the pipe . After the pipe goes thru all of its steps to become a high grade pipe it goes thru another quality check-- if not perfect (in their eyes) it is downgraded to a Savinelli Autograph Second. If is does make the grade (as this pipe has done) it is stamped with the gold autograph signature that is the symbol for this Top of the Line Savinelli! This Autograph has a smooth, highly polished finish which allows the great grain patterns to show thru ( lots of great flame grain ). For a pipe of its' size - it is very well-balanced in its' design and is quite lightweight. The smooth finish of the Plateau Briar does feel good to the hand. The factor of the pipe of this size being lightweight also speaks for the high quality of the briar that is used . Overall length of 6"; bowl height of about 2" with inner bowl diameter of 3/4". The only 'issue' that I can see is that it appears t might have been some darkening at the top of the bowl that the prior owner tried to 'buff away'. T was a sign of ash in the bowl when I purchased it-- but no other signs of use! NO teethmarks on the stem! No issues. The price of this pipe in New Condition would be in the range of $300.00 to $400.00. Nomenclature is crisp and clear and located on the shank: Savinelli over Autograph and Italy and 4 . The Handcut stem contains the gold signature- symbol for the Autograph line of pipes . The pipe can be used with 6mm Balsa filters (included) or the adapter (also included) if you do not like using filters. I prefer to not use either the adapter or the filters- so you have another choice depending on your preferences.
