SCARCE 1849 LIBERTY HEAD TYPE $1 DOLLAR GOLD COINCLOSED WREATHEveryone hasheard about the 1849 California Gold Rush, but this beautiful U.S. gold dollaris unknown to many. This one-dollar coin was short-lived pre-Civil war “Type 1,”or Liberty Head Type, variety (1849-1854). It was the smallest regular-issueU.S. gold coin and was a direct result of the California Gold Rush – A truemust have for all gold collectors! Composed of 90% pure gold!More about the Liberty Head Type: Designed by James B.Longacre, the first type of gold dollar is known as the"Liberty Head" type or the "Type I" gold dollar. Theobverse of the coins depicts Liberty's head circled by thirteenstars. She faces to the left and wears a coronet inscribed with theword "LIBERTY". The reverse, designed with help from Longacre'sassistant, Peter Filatreu Cross, depicts a simplewreath encircling the date and value of the coin, and theinscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Weighing1.672 grams, the coin had a composition of .900 gold and .100 copper. Ittherefore contained .04837 ounces of pure gold. Starting in 1849, a quantity ofthe Liberty Head gold dollar was minted each year at Philadelphia andDahlonega. The coin was also minted at Charlotte, New Orleans,and San Francisco.
