THE STORYOF A GREAT HORSE, CRESCEUS, 2:02 ¼ by John McCarthy, with a chapter on the training of Cresceus by George H. Ketcham, published by The Hollenbeck Press, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1902, strongly appears to be an unstated first edition, hardback, no dust jacket, pasted-in circular picture on front cover, 213 pages. According to the author, “This story of the wonderful career of Cresceus, 2:02 ¼, Is presented to the horse-loving public in the belief that it will prove of interest and also show the wonderful progress and development of the American trotter. To the hundreds of newspaper writers in all parts of the United States from whose writings the author has taken the liberty of drawing literally, my most sincere thanks are due for favors and assistance in the preparation of the book. Book in POOR to fair condition, more poor than fair. Please bid accordingly. Cover shows definite old, unattractive water stain that can be seen in the listing photo. Inside of book appeared to fare better, with just mild rippling to the pages. Stitched binding appears to remain intact. Front endpapers show more evidence of once being wet than rear ones. No speckled or mass foxing. There is a distinctive warp to the whole book. Pages separate easily, though there is a slight musty smell that can be detected with a close nose. A unique historical old find! Think "read now, keep in the collection and/or give for THIS or NEXT Christmas." Better, well-written and/or illustrated rare old books, even when not in perfect condition, about some particular horse/equestrian related topics are, in my opinion, one of the very best economic investments an individual can decide to make, in both good or bad economic climates :) !
