It's my pleasure to offer at auction an Extremely Nice and quite Scarce 1913-1914 HEDDON NO.1-1/2 "OUR FAMOUS $1.50 ROD" 5 FT., 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD WITH CLOTH BAG. The No.1-1/2 "$1.50 Rod" evolved directly from Heddon's No.1 "The Famous $1.00 Rod" of 1910-1912, the only difference being the No.1-1/2 had a split bamboo butt section, while the butt of the No.1 was made of less expensive ironwood. First offered in 1913 and would sell through 1917, afterwhich it was completely redesigned. Because this example is without the Dowagiac bass decal, first applied to Heddon rods in 1915, we know it was built from 1913 to 1914. Due to the unique design of the wood handle, these remain the earliest Heddon rods that are easy to identify. I've added a photo of the original listing from page 6 of Heddon's 1913 catalog. Reel seat is stamped with the earliest "Heddon's Dowagiac" rod and reel logo. Built with Calcutta cane and comes equipped with file proof metal guides & tip top, sliding band reel seat with attached trigger, solid maple grip and wound in red and black silk, with intermediates the length of the rod. These were only available in 5 ft. lengths. Though likely made in staggering numbers, few of these early economy models seem to surface anymore, especially in this nice of condition. Rod is in solid Very Fine condition, showing only light wear for these. Moderate brassing to the sliding band and winding check is about the only wear worth mentioning. Bamboo is extra nice, with no splits or cracks whatsoever. Both sections are the correct length and are relatively straight. Varnish and wraps appear to have been redone, although done strictly to original. All guides, tip top, ferrules and winding check are very nice. Reel seat works perfectly and is boldly stamped. The solid maple grip is near pristine and is the nicest I've seen on any of these models. This beauty would be very difficult to upgrade. Put up in a period cloth bag that could very well be original. It's in about Very Good condition, showing a few holes and fraying, but remaining solid and serviceable. One of the earliest of Heddon models and one that would enhance any collection. To be sold in true auction format, with a very low starting bid and NO RESERVE. Buyer to pay $13.00 for bullet-proof, professional shipping via U.S. Priority Mail. Insurance is optional. Payment must be received within 7 days of auction closure. Thanks for your time and good luck.
