This is a rare Civil War book, the 1st edition of Hand Book For Active Service , by Egbert L. Viele, published in New York City in 1861. Veile was a Captain in the 7th NYNG and dedicated the book to the regiment. It was owned and signed by, Emile Henry Lacombe a member of company K, of the 7th Regiment New York National Guard. It is 5 1/4" x 7 1/2", 252 pages plus cover, a wealth of information, with illustrations. It is in very good condition, complete, gold embossed cloth cover, no torn, marked or missing pages, binding not coming apart, overall normal wear (only small piece torn from corner of back blank flyleaf page). . Sometimes referred to as the "Silk Stocking Regiment" they were one of the first regiments to arrive in Washington at the outbreak of the war ("The Regiment that saved the Capital"). This unit produced many fine officers in various regiments throughout the war. A nice hard to find early Civil War tactics book that was used by many new officers of various regiments at the outbreak of the Civil War. A nice addition for a Civil War collection or as a gift to a Civil War Buff.
