Offered for your consideration is a fine vintage Buck model 639 "Fieldmate" hunting and/or tactical knife. The Fieldmate has a very interesting history and has been discontinued for many years now. This model is regarded by many to be one of the finest and most versatile fixed blade knives made by Buck, and many were greatly disappointed when it was discontinued in the mid 1990's. This model was an off-shoot of Buck's legendary model 184 "Buckmaster" survival knife that was originally designed for the Navy SEALs. The Buckmaster was designed for the Navy SEALs through an R & D company that Buck became associated with. This is the same company that would later become Phrobis and design the M9 bayonets. This model shares many blade design elements with the Buckmaster and it's production run was marked by some design changes and variations. Later versions of this knife were made without the sawback, with black Kraton handles, and with the tip serrations on the other side of the blade...or any combination of these variations. Blades left over from the 639 were later used for a couple build-outs using Buck's classic black phenolic handles.The knife has seen only light use and remains very nice.
