This is a 65 mm (just over 2 ½ inches) in diameter, 131-gram (4.6 oz) High Relief Bronze US Mint Army Medal, originally awarded in Gold, to Major General Zachary Taylor for the Battle of Monterey, September 1846. The original gold medal was produced in 1848. The obverse of medal was designed by John T. Battin. Condition is MINT. This was likely struck during the early 1970’s and it has the matte finish typical of post-WWII US Mint Medals. This is among the vast majority of 19 th century and early 20 th century US Mint medals that have not been produced by the mint since 1985 due to very low demand. Of course the MINT is to blame for the low demand because they never advertised the availability of these medals in almost FOURTY years! I will combine postage for winning bidders of multiple items.
