This auction is for an original postwar Lionel D-106 Dealer Display Train Layout in Excellent condition. This remarkable 8' x 8' operating display was created and produced by the Lionel Display Department in 1953 and was only available to approved Lionel retail outlets. According to Lionel production records, only 225 of these displays were ever made and who knows how many survive today.
The original hand-painted mountain and cliffs have been professionally cleaned and repaired in places. All layout surfaces have been professionally re-grassed using vintage original Lionel 919 landscape grass. Likewise, all roadways and trim-boards have been professionally repainted using paint that was expertly matched to original factory samples. The control panel has been faithfully reproduced from an original D-106 sample. Please note how the catalog version of the layout was shown without an RW transformer mounted to the control panel. It wasn't until the layout went into production that the RW transformer was added to power the mountain section of the layout. I will provide a copy of the original operating instructions and wiring diagram to the winning bidder which references the addition of the RW transformer.
The layout's wiring has been replaced using original cloth-covered wire from Lionel's Display Department. The Jones 6-pin male/female wire plugs which connect and power both halves of the layout are original to the D-106 display. The track, switches and accessories have been cleaned, repaired and are all in working order. Of particular interest are the two 310 Lionel Dealer Display Billboards. According to Lionel records, the layout did come with these two unique billboards but I cannot verify if the ones on this layout are original.
