ScarceChild's ToyTransferwarePlate HEY DIDDLE DIDDLE Whittaker and Co. Staffordshire England 1888 This is another one of our most popular child's transferware toy plates, circa 1888. Originally part of a complete miniature children's tea set, the plate measures 4 3/4" in diameter. The transfer is a rich chocolate brown against a creamy earthenware background. The plate depicts the characters in the much beloved child's nursery rhyme: HEY DIDDLE DIDDLE THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE THE COW JUMPED OVER THE MOON THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED TO SEE SUCH A CRAFT AND THE DISH RAN AWAY WITH THE SPOON The plate was made in Hanley in the Staffordshire district of England by Whittaker and Co. as part of its Nursery Rhymes series. The plate is marked with the maker's cartouche and the registration number 103739, indicating the year 1888. The plate is in great condition, with no chips, cracks, repairs. Stilt marks and a minor underglaze kiln dust, original to the making. Minor crazing and a small area of discoloration on the back, consistent with age and prior use. The plate is well potted and the transfer is richly detailed. This great little plate, offered as is, a joy to behold! Whittaker's Nursery Rhyme tea set pieces are highly sought after.
