Very scarce and original World War II USMC "Kabar" type military fighting utility knife by Pal with rare USMC leather sheath. A tough one to find that shows its age, use, and wear. Stacked leather washer grips with five shallow grooves. The grip shows wear and seems to have thinned out a pit near the top. Top and bottom of grips have thick red and black fiber spacers as is correct for this maker. Pommel is thick with small round peened tang to secure. Crossguard is thin with correct slight bend. The crossguard is a little loose. Approximately 7 inch blade is of the scarce plated version. The blade has wear to the finish with sharpening. The blade retains most of its original shape although the tip seems to be a bit blunted. Obverse of ricasso is stamped PAL. Reverse ricasso is deeply stamped USMC in large block letters. Blade and metal fittings are fairly clean with some gray pots and scattered very light pitting. See page 91 of M.H. Cole's, US Military Knives Book III for further information. Knife is complete with rare USMC sheath marked Boyt and dated 43 for 1943. This sheath variation is shown on page 90 of Cole's reference. Medium brown leather sheath with nine metal staples and white cotton stitching. Sheath is complete with belt loop, retention strap and braided shoe lace tie down. The sheath shows wear and has some damage along the edge of the front belt loop area. Sheath also has original owner's name, service number, and hometown scratched to front and back. The Pal made knives are much more difficult to locate that those by Kabar or Camillus. This is only the second of these USMC marked sheaths that I ever obtained. Scarce example.
