Highly recommended. artist info from album notes etc.: Italian composer Scelsi studied with Arnold Schoenberg, Walter Klein, Egon Koehler, Giacinto Sallustia, Ottorino Respighi, and Alfredo Casella, was influenced by Alexander Scriabin and eastern music (especially Coptic chants and Persian Sufi music), was friends with Jean Cocteau and Virginia Woolf, worked with Frances-Marie Uitti, John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Earle Brown, was a mentor to American expatriates in Rome in the 60s like Alvin Curran and Frederic Rzewski, and experimented with microtonality, blazing the same trails as John Eaton, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, Alois Haba, Julian Carrillo, Tony Conrad, and Harry Partch. Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, colaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Joseph Beuys, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.). German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen was a student of Olivier Messiaen and a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis, and worked with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, and Mauricio Kagel; he pioneered electronic music at the INA-GRM musique concrete studios of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bayle, and Bernard Parmegiani, at NHK Tokyo w Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Jon Appleton also composed, and at WDR Koln along with Herbert Eimert, Henri Pousseur, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Gyorgi Ligeti, Franco Evangelisti, Konrad Boehmer, Anestis Logothetis, and Herbert Brun, and he explored improvisation and live electronics with David Tudor, Vinko Globokar, and Michel Portal. Kessler is a Swiss composer who studied with Heinz Friedrich Hartig, Boris Blacher, and Ernst Pepping and worked at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales. Cowell was a modern American composer who studied under Charles Seeger, was admired by Arnold Schoenberg, Artur Schnabel, Kandinsky, Prunieres, Anton Webern, and Bela Bartok, associated with Charles Ives, Carl Ruggles, Edgard Varese, and Wallingford Riegger, pioneered the use of tone clusters and inside-the-piano playing techniques, and influenced John Cage in his use of indeterminacy and incorporation of eastern scales and rhythmic modes.
