Schafer and Vater Porcelain Company began operations in Germany in the 1890's and were most prolific prior to WWI. They are know for creating very detailed and colorful pottery pieces which are still very popular and collectible. Although they made various items such as match holders and strikers, pitchers, decorative figurines, hair receivers, etc., I have always been drawn to their humorous figural bottles or liquor decanters and flasks. Many were made expressly for export and were shipped out empty to be filled by the purchasers. This type of bottle is often described as a "give-away" because that's what they were used for in many cases. Restaurants, bars, liquor stores, hotels, organizations, etc., would use these as "thank you" gifts for their clients or use them to further encourage business. This little flask is one of the cutest Schafer & Vater made. In order to take a drink, one has to kiss Snookums, since the spout is his little red lips! This flask measures almost 4 1/4" tall, about 3" across at its widest. The white bisque oval shaped base measures 2 1/2" wide by 1 1/8" deep. The back and sides are finished in the traditional S&V manner with glossy brown finish and the company's characteristic "wood grain" or "tree bark" The little fellow has rosy red cheeks, nicely combed light brown hair, a pudgy little arm and leg and very nice details overall. He wears a white shirt and light blue booties as he sits on a little patch of green grass on a little platform. "Kiss Snookums" is incised into the front of the base. The porcelain cap covering the cork looks to be the correct size and may be the original cover, but it may have been painted at some time because it has a dull finish. The light spot that can be seen on the hair under the curl occurred during manufacture because it is under the finishing glaze. There is one very tiny chip, about 1/8" long, on the white base on the bottom under the "K" There are no other chips, cracks or crazing. Please feel free to email me with any questions.
